Aluminum pipe, cut to size

Pipe uses a nominal size and schedule. Nominal size is a name, not an exact outside diameter or opening.

Dimensional example: 2 in nominal schedule 40 pipe measures 2.375 in across the outside. Its wall is 0.154 in; its calculated inside diameter is 2.067 in.

Schedule names a wall series for each nominal size. Schedule 40 does not mean a 0.040 in wall.

Tube uses outside dimensions and wall thickness. A 2 in outside-diameter round tube is smaller outside than 2 in nominal pipe.

A 2 in square tube measures 2 in across each outside face. Neither tube example describes a 2 in opening.

People cut hollow round stock for sleeves, rollers, stanchions and handrail parts. The application does not tell you which size system to use.
