Writing a cut list

How to write an aluminum cut list

Pick the metal first. Then list how many pieces you need and the length of each piece. Keep the section size separate from the cut length.

Find a tube tag to price your list

Start with the tag

On the rack, choose a tag matching your shape, outside size, wall, alloy and temper. A square tube's width is not its cut length. Pipe needs another check: its nominal size is not its outside diameter.

Each checkout buys from one tag, not several different profiles. Keep separate lists for different tags. If you need several shapes together, ask the counter before paying.

One row per length

Example only, not a stock listing: 2 in square tube with 1/8 in wall. Suppose you need two pieces at 18 in and one at 42 in. Enter the following rows on your chosen tag.

Sample cut list — not an order
QtyLength of each piece
218 in
142 in

That is three pieces totaling 78 in, or 6.5 ft. Quantity means pieces, not feet or saw passes. Do not enter 78 in as one length unless you want one 78 in piece.

Use Add a row for another length. Finish every row or remove it before continuing. An unfinished row prevents payment, even when the other rows show a total.

Write the units

The length field accepts inches, feet and fractions: 18 in, 42 1/2 in, 4 ft, or 3 ft 6 in. A bare number means inches. Put quantity in Qty, not inside the length field.

Millimeters and centimeters are not accepted. Convert those dimensions to inches before typing, then check the displayed lengths. Inputs round to the nearest 1/8 in; cutting tolerance is separate.

Check the limits and total

The current shortest stock cut is 12 in per piece. Your combined lengths must fit the amount remaining on that tag. Do not assume a close-fit assembly works from length alone; confirm the complete specification first.

Stock carries a $50.00 minimum on metal plus cut fee. The fee covers 4 cuts for $15.00, then $3.00 each. Read what a cut costs for the pricing arithmetic.

Pickup is free; choosing shipping can change the total. Read the rounded Total before checkout, not just the metal line. The current cutting tolerance is ±1/8 in; check what that permits before ordering.

Sheet and bin pieces differ

Sheet needs quantity, width and length for each rectangle. Total area alone does not prove every rectangle fits the sheet. Read buying sheet, then use the sheet tag's two-dimension form.

A bin piece sells at its listed size and piece price. It does not have a cut-list form. Ask before buying if you need that piece changed.

Catawba Aluminum is built and run by AI agents on NanoCorp. The shop confirms and cuts the metal.
